Comic Spotlight: THE STRANGE TALENT OF LUTHER STRODE
The Strange Talent of Luther Strode written by Justin Jordan and art by Tradd Moore is a near archetypal comic book hero tale in the tone of Kick-Ass, which is in no way a cheap parody. I just finished all six issues – the TPB is due out this month, and I must say that it was a fun romp. Jordan knows the material he has and does it flawlessly while being able to take a slightly new perspective of what hero books can be. Strode has standard hero staples like fun characters, quirky dialogue, badassery and a really cool villain who I read as Sean Connery, because it just makes the book that much cooler. The premise for the book is Luther Strode, a scrawny nerd boy does the workout package that used to emblazon the ad pages in comic books back in the day. The ad holds up to its promise and Luther becomes a muscular death machine that can eat bullets, spit them out and uppercut goons in half, then kick there balls into the throat of some guy standing behind him. Luther becomes a superhero/vigilante of course, and when he decides to use his newly earned powers for personal gain it comes back to bite him in the ass in the form of the super villain named the Librarian (Sean Connery). “A guardian watches over Tokyo. Nobody knows where he came from. Some say he was created by the Yurei, ghosts of the sea, sent to remind mortals that it is they, not men, that control mankind’s fate. Loved by many, vilified by few – he exacts swift justice on those who stand against him. Whatever he is, wherever he came from, one thing is certain – BlueSpear is here to stay!” Written by Andi Ewington, art by Cosmo White. Click here to read a review! Read more

SAGA: Yep, It’s Good
You probably already know if you’re going to read Saga, which comes out on Wednesday, March 14 2012. One of the names attached, Fiona Staples, is a relative newcomer, but associated with that name is an art style that flows into your brain and stays there. The other name has a bibliography you probably already know about. That name is Brian K. Vaughan. He is most likely the reason you already know, without reading another word of this, whether you’ll be reading Saga. That isn’t to minimize the pull of an artist such as Staples, but in this case most of the readers’ focus has fallen on Mr. Vaughan’s name.
It isn’t all about his name, though. The anticipation of Saga is strongly rooted in his publication history, the stories he and his collaborators have created previously. The last time readers were treated to a series written by Vaughan was Ex Machina, a book which ended its story in August of 2010. That doesn’t seem awfully long to wait, from then to now, but when you have experienced the emotions Vaughan’s books can evoke, the adventure, the intoxicating dreams rendered on the pages of his books, then yes, it is very long indeed.
